Tutuola, Amos

Enciclopedia on line

Scrittore nigeriano di lingua inglese (Abeokuta 1920 - Ibadan 1997). Il suo primo romanzo, The palm-wine drinkard (1952; trad. it. 1954), che fu recensito con entusiasmo da D. Thomas, lo segnalò a livello internazionale. Affabulatore smaliziato, ha sviluppato nelle sue storie il tema del viaggio iniziatico (My life in the bush of ghosts, 1954, trad. it., insieme col precedente, 1983; Simbi and the satyr of the dark jungle, 1955; The brave African huntress, 1958; Feather woman of the jungle, 1962; Ajaiyi and his inherited poverty, 1967), trasponendo in chiave moderna il patrimonio della tradizione orale yoruba. Dopo un lungo silenzio è tornato sulla scena letteraria con The witch herbalist of the remote town (1980), Pauper, Brawler and Slanderer (1987; trad. it. 1990).
