Poeta e romanziere inglese (Cardiff 1923 - Londra 2014). Uno dei "giovani" poeti che si designarono col nome di mavericks ("ribelli"). Esordì con la raccolta di versi After every green thing (1949), cui sono seguiti Walking under water (1952), Tenants of the house (1957), Poems, Golders green (1962), A small desperation (1968), la raccolta Funland and other poems (1973); la sua più recente raccolta di poesie è intitolata Running late (2006). Il suo romanzo più noto è Ash on a young man's sleeve (1954); There was a young man from Cardiff (1999) ne costituisce la continuazione. È anche autore di un dramma in versi: Fire in heaven (1957) e di due volumi autobiografici: Poet in the family (1974; incluso nel successivo Goodbye, twentieth century, 2001) e The presence (2007). Nel 1957 ha curato con H. Sergeant un'antologia, Maverick.
