Sociobiologo statunitense (Birmingham, Alabama, 1929 - Burlington 2021); insegnante di zoologia alla Harvard University (1955), poi lecturer presso il Kings College di Cambridge, dal 2007 prof. di entomologia alla Harvard University. In Sociobiology: the new synthesis (1975; trad. it. 1979) estende il darwinismo allo studio del comportamento sociale e delle società animali affermando, nel contempo, la possibilità di studiare la specie umana anche attraverso l'analisi sociobiologica, oltre che attraverso l'analisi genetica o endocrinologica. Rilevante, se pure controverso, il suo contributo alle scienze sociali, aperto all'impiego dei metodi e dei principî della biologia delle popolazioni e della sociobiologia.
