Storico della matematica e della scienza, belga naturalizzato statunitense (Gand 1884 - Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1956); prof. (dal 1940) alla Harvard University. Fondatore di due rassegne internazionali di storia della scienza, Isis (1912) e Osiris (1936), autore di importanti trattati generali di storia della scienza: Introduction to the history of science (3 voll. in 5 tomi, 1927-48); The history of science and the new humanism (1931); Guide to the history of science (1952); Men of science in the Renaissance (1957); A history of science (2 voll.: I, Ancient science through the golden age of Greece, 1952; II, Hellenistic science and culture in the last three centuries before Christ, post., 1959).
