Medico, nato ad Aberdeen il 10 ottobre 1780, morto a Edimburgo il 14 novembre 1844. Si laureò a Edimburgo nel 1803, fu medico del St George's Hospital a Londra; esercitò la medicina a Edimburgo dove sì rese benemerito nell'assistenza ai poveri; nel 1836 fu rettore del Marischal College. È noto specie per i suoi importanti lavori sul sistema nervoso.
Scritti: Pathological and practical researches on diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord (Edimburgo 1827); Pathological and practical researches on diseases of the Stomach, the intestinal canal, the Liver and the other Viscera of the Abdomen (ivi 1828); Inquiries concerning the intellectual powers and the investigations of the truth (ivi 1830); The philosophy of the moral Feelings (Londra 1833), ecc.
