Storico e numismatico inglese (Londra 1914 - ivi 2004), prof. di antichità classica nell'univ. di Edimburgo (1949-59), rettore delle univ. di Kharṭūm (1956-58) e di Belfast (1959-66). Ritiratosi dalla vita accademica, si trasferì in Italia, a Gattaiola (Lucca). Si occupò della storia dell'impero romano e dell'Italia antica e della monetazione romana d'età imperiale, con particolare attenzione agli aspetti dell'ideologia. Fra le opere: From imperium to auctoritas (1946); Roman anniversary issues (1950); The six main aes coinages of Augustus (1953); Roman history from coins (1958); Julius Caesar (1969); The Jews in the Roman world (1973); The army of the Caesars (1974); From Al exander to Cleopatra (1982); The Roman emperors (1985); The classical Greeks (1989); Greeks and Romans: a social history (1992); Art in the Roman Empire (1996); Sick Caesars (2000). Del 1994 è l'autobiografia My first eighty years.
