Biblista statunitense (New York 1928 - Redwood City, California, 1998); sulpiziano, venne ordinato prete nel 1953 e partecipò come esperto al Concilio Vaticano II; fu il primo cattolico a insegnare nello Union theological seminary di New York (1971-90); membro della Pontificia commissione biblica (1972-78 e 1996-97), fu presidente della Catholic biblical association of America, della Society of biblical literature e dell'International society for New Testament studies. Ha studiato soprattutto i vangeli e diretto The Jerome biblical commentary (1968; trad. it. 1973) e The new Jerome biblical commentary (1989; trad. it. 1997). Tra le opere: The gospel according to John (2 voll., 1966-70; trad. it. 1979); The birth of the Messiah (1977; trad. it. 1981); The epistles of John (1982; trad. it. 1986); The Churches the apostles left behind (1984; trad. it. 1992); The death of the Messiah (2 voll., 1994; trad. it. 1999); An introduction to the New Testament (1997; trad. it. 2001).
