Storico e sociologo statunitense (presso Knightstown, Indiana, 1874 - New Haven, Connecticut, 1948); docente universitario, organizzò (1918) a New York la New school of social research. Nel 1940 ebbe la cattedra di storia americana nella Johns Hopkins University di Baltimora. Nelle sue opere più notevoli (An economic interpretation of the constitution of the United States, 1913; The economic origins of Jeffersonian democracy, 1915; The rise of american civilization, in collab. con la moglie, 1927; American foreign policy in the making, 1932-40, 1946) B. tende a dare della storia americana un quadro di contrasti tra classi o ceti economici in lotta. La moglie Mary Ritter (1876-1958) collaborò con lui e si occupò dei movimenti laburisti e femministi: A short history of the american labor movement (1920), Woman as a force in history (1946).
