Critico statunitense (Murray, Kentucky, 1906 - New Haven, Connecticut, 1994), diresse con R. Penn Warren (1935-42) la Southern Review, organo del movimento chiamato "New Criticism" al quale aderirono notevoli critici americani che, nell'analisi dei testi, rifiutavano di prendere in considerazione elementi sociologici, storici e biografici, continuando così, nello studio della poesia, l'orientamento estetico di T. S. Eliot ed E. Pound. Dal 1947 professore d'inglese alla Yale University. Tra le sue opere: Modern poetry and the tradition (1939); The well wrought urn (1947); The hidden God (1963); William Faulkner, toward Yoknapatawpha and beyond (1978); The language of the American South (1985); Historical evidence and the reading of seventeenth-century poetry (1991).
