Archeologo nederlandese (n. L'Aia 1925). Prof. di storia antica all'Università di Leida (1968-72), e poi direttore dell'Istituto nederlandese di Roma (1972-90), ha diretto gli scavi di Satricum (1977-90). Importante il suo contributo sulla storia di Sparta e sulla sua produzione ceramica; si è inoltre interessato alla metallurgia greca d'età arcaica. Tra le opere: Lapis Satricanus (in collab. con altri, 1980), Satricum en de Volsken ("Satricum e i Volsci", 1986), Lakonian black-glazed pottery, I-III (1989-2000), Das andere Sparta (1996), The sons of Hephaistos. Aspects of the archaic Greek bronze industry (2000), Trebenishte: the fortunes of an unusual excavation (in collab. con R. Vasic, 2003), Agalmata: Studien zur griechisch-archaischen Bronzekunst (2006). Gli è stato dedicato il volume Stips votiva (a cura di M. Gnade, 1991).
