Storico statunitense di origine tedesca (Berlino 1918 - Madison 1999). Nel 1937 si trasferì in Gran Bretagna per sfuggire alle persecuzioni razziali (la famiglia, ebraica, era proprietaria di una casa editrice di giornali) e nel 1939 negli Stati Uniti, di cui assunse la cittadinanza nel 1945. Insegnò nelle università dello Iowa, del Wisconsin e nell'univ. ebraica di Gerusalemme. Studiò la storia del 16º sec. (Europe in the sixteenth century, in collab. con H. G. Koeningsberger, 1968; trad. it. 1969) e, soprattutto, le radici culturali del nazismo. Tra le opere: The culture of Western Europe (1961); The crisis of german ideology (1964; trad. it. 1968); The nationalization of the masses (1974; trad. it. 1975), Toward the final solution: a history of european racism (1978; trad. it. 1980); Masses and man. Nationalist and fascist perceptions of reality (1980; trad. it. 1982); Political symbolism in modern Europe (1982); Nationalism and sexuality; respectability and abnormal sexuality in modern Europe (1985; preceduto dall'ed. it. 1984); Fallen soldiers; reshaping the memory of the world wars (1990; trad. it. 1990); Confronting the nation: jewish and western nationalism (1993); The image of man: the creation of mod ern masculinity (1996; trad. it. 1997). Del 1999 è l'autobiografia Confronting history (trad. it. 2004).
