Critico e scrittore statunitense (Neuilly-sur-Seine 1929 - Cambridge 2020). Figlio di genitori ebrei di origine austriaca, nel 1940 lasciò la Francia rifugiandosi negli USA. Comparatista di vasta e profonda erudizione, studioso attento, quanto spregiudicato, della storia e dei concetti politici, ha insegnato nelle più prestigiose università americane ed europee (dal 1974 al 1994 nell'univ. di Ginevra). Ha ricevuto numerosi premi e riconoscimenti tra cui il premio Principe de Asturias de Comunicación y Humanidades (2001) e il premio Alfonso Reyes (2007). È autore anche di racconti (Anno Domini, 1964), di romanzi (The portage to San Cristóbal of A. H., 1981, trad. it. 1982; Proofs, 1992, trad. it.
