Storico tedesco (Berlino 1900 - Urbana, Ill., 1988), allievo di W. Goetz ed E. Troeltsch. Emigrato dalla Germania per motivi razziali, ha insegnato a Oxford (1939-42), poi alla Johns Hopkins Univ. (1946-47); naturalizzato statunitense nel 1945, è stato "research fellow and bibliographer" della Newberry Library di Chicago (1949-65). Si è dedicato al Rinascimento italiano: ediz. di Leonardo Bruni Aretino, Humanistisch-philosophische Schriften, 1928 (con un'importante premessa: Bruni and the civic humanism of Florences); The crisis of the early Italian Renaissance: civic humanism and republican liberty in an age of classicism and tyranny, 2 voll., 1955 (trad. it. 1970); Humanistic and political literature in Florence and Venice at the beginning of the Quattrocento, 1955; From Petrarch to Leonardo Bruni, 1968; Petrarch's Secretum: its making and its meaning, 1985.
