Scrittore statunitense (New York 1913 - Davos 1984). Pervenuto giovanissimo al successo con l'atto unico Bury the dead, d'ispirazione pacifista, in cartellone a Broadway nel 1936, iniziò una rapida carriera come sceneggiatore a Hollywood e drammaturgo capace di far presa sul grande pubblico (Siege, 1937; The gentle people, 1939; Sons and soldiers, 1943; The assassin, 1945; Children from their games, 1962; A choice of wars, 1967). Nel dopoguerra si affermò anche come romanziere con The young lions (1948; trad. it. 1953), da cui dieci anni dopo venne tratto l'omonimo film diretto da E. Dmytryk, e con altre storie di notevole popolarità, tra cui The troubled air (1951), Lucy Crown (1956; trad. it. 1957), Two weeks in another town (1960; trad. it. 1961), Voices of a summer day (1965; trad. it. 1966), Rich man, poor man (1969; trad. it. 1971), Evening in Byzantium (1973; trad. it. 1973), Nightwork (1975; trad. it. 1975), e i più recenti Bread upon the waters (1981) e Acceptable losses (1982). Da ricordare anche, tra le numerose raccolte di racconti, Sailor off the Bremen (1939), Welcome to the city (1942), Mixed company (1950; trad. it. I racconti di I. Shaw, 1955), Love on a dark street (1965; trad. it. 1974), God was here, but he left early (1973), Short stories: five decades (1978).
