Grierson, Sir Herbert John Clifford

Critico e storico letterario scozzese (Lerwick, Scozia, 1866 - Cambridge 1960). Ha insegnato ad Aberdeen (1914-15) e all'univ. di Edimburgo (1915-35), dove è stato rettore (1936-39). È noto soprattutto per i suoi studî sul Seicento inglese: Poems of John Donne (1912), Metaphysical poets, Donne to Butler (1921), Crosscurrents in the literature of the sev enteenth century (1929). Tra i saggi di altro argomento si citano: The background of english literature (1925), Lyrical poetry from Blake to Hardy (1928), Letters of Sir Walter Scott (1937), Milton and Wordsworth, prophets and poets (1937), Criticism and creation (1950); ha dato inoltre una notevole edizione dei Poems of John Milton (1925).
