Storico dell'arte (Lipsia 1902 - Hampstead, Londra, 1983). Si è occupato soprattutto dell'arte barocca e dell'architettura moderna, compiendo studî fondamentali su tali argomenti (Die italienische Malerei vom Ende der Renaissance bis zum ausgehenden Rokoko, 1928-30; Pioneers of the modern movement from W. Morris to W. Gropius, 1936; An outline of European architecture, 1942, trad. it. 1959; High Victorian design, 1951; Sir Christopher Wren, 1958; A dictionary of architecture, 1966; Studies in art, architecture and design, 2 voll., 1968; A history of building types, 1976). Notevole la collezione Buildings of England, serie di guide architettoniche della Gran Bretagna pubblicate sotto la sua direzione e in gran parte scritte da lui stesso.
