Scrittore (Noblesville, Indiana, 1886 - Danbury 1975), noto soprattutto come autore di romanzi gialli che hanno per protagonisti l'obeso detective Nero Wolf, gastronomo e appassionato di orchidee, e il suo estroverso aiutante Archie Goodwin. Il primo romanzo della serie fu Fer-de-Lance (1934; trad. it. La traccia del serpente, 1986), seguirono fra gli altri: The league of the frightened men (1935; trad. it. 1985); Enough (1944); Murder by the book (1951); The black mountain (1954); Three at Wolfe's door (1960); Death of a Doxy (1966); Death of a Dude (1969).
