Storico dell'antichità tedesco (n. Neuendettelsau 1931). Prof. di filologia classica all'univ. di Berlino dal 1966 al 1969 e poi a Zurigo dal 1969 al 1996; nel 1990 ha vinto il Premio Balzan.
