Storico (Salem, Massachusetts, 1796 - Boston 1859). Compiuti gli studî giuridici alla Harvard University, viaggiò in Europa. Si dedicò soprattutto alla storia spagnola. Opere fondamentali: History of the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic (3 voll., 1838), History of the conquest of Mexico, with a preliminary view of the ancient mexican civilization, ecc. (1843), History of the conquest of Peru (1847) e History of the reign of Philip II (1855-58, non completata).
